New blog post! 10 Lessons I Learned From My Summer Internship

As of yesterday, my summer internship is officially over!

I turned in my identification badge, printed out my hours, and turned in my final seminar paper. Score.

While this gives me cause for much celebration and happy dancing, I must pause and reflect on what I have learned during my 300+ hours as a Special Events/Fundraising Intern at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley…

Auditions

Well, I’ve just scheduled my first audition of the season at the Porthouse Theater. One down, three to go: the Pittsburgh CLO, StrawHat, and Disney.  Many people may ask, “What the heck is ‘StrawHat?’” No, it’s not a country western festival. It’s a huge open call audition, featuring about a thousand non-equity actors all competing for jobs from dozens of theatrical companies.  The idea is that, through working at one of these theatres, you would get your Equity union card. This is my first year auditioning for professional summer stock companies; I’m going in with a mindset of not necessarily expecting job offers, but learning from the audition experience so that I may improve my technique in the future. In other words, I’m not going to be crushed if I don’t get in with any of these companies, I’m fine with simply attending these auditions (though a job offer WOULD be absolutely wonderful and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!) and networking along the way. Wish me luck! ;)
